NDC (New Distribution Capability) is a travel industry-supported program (NDC Program) launched by IATA for the development and market adoption of a new, XML-based data transmission standard (NDC Standard)
NDC (New Distribution Capability) will enable the travel industry to transform the way air products are retailed to corporations, leisure and business travelers, by addressing the industry’s current distribution limitations: product differentiation and time-to-market, access to full and rich air content and finally, transparent shopping experience. source
One way IATA promotes NDC in airlines' as well as software development industries is through innovation and hackathons and here's an invitation from IATA.
"Hackathons are a great way for developers to build innovative solutions around the NDC standards in a short period of time! Join us in Dublin on 19-21 May, 2017 as we bring airline retailing to the next level by addressing challenges around business and leisure travel": http://ndc.developer.iata.org/hackathon/dub17. This is the first of 3 hackathons scheduled for this year, with next one in Silicon Valley (@ LinkedIn offices) and one in autumn in Paris (@ Polytechnique University).
Datalex has decided to participate to the Dublin one as one of the NDC API providers with our DLX NDC API 3.2 release, based on / on top of a JetBlue deployment. We will make our API available (is estimated) to 20-25 teams that will have the possibility to code against it (if so they'll choose from the list of offerings).
But, in addition to this, we intend to participate with a development team that will hack (sorry develop) against our own / JetBlue NDC API. The team will have to come up (apart of the first place in competition) with a revolutionary application that will use our own NDC API. IATA has set up few challenges in 2 categories: LEISURE or BUSINESS travel, you can read more in section "Challenges" on the same page
The NDC Dublin Hackathon comprises:
- One week ideation phase to prepare your project around leisure & business travel
- A 24-48 hour coding experience in Dublin alongside specialized workshops
- A 6 weeks incubation phase to ensure the winning ideas have the potential to become robust strong and successful business cases and the possibility to pitch these ideas at industry forums
During the NDC Dublin Hackathon you will be asked to use at least one of the NDC APIs and address at least one of the challenges around leisure or business travel. In parallel, you will be able to attend some of the workshops that will take place on-site and access to mentors that will guide you through the Hackathon. Source
